The popular ISO 41000 series is the home of the ‘Management System Standard’ for Facilities Management.
What is Facilities management?
Facility Management or Facilities Management is defined as an “organisational function which integrates people, place and process within the built environment with the purpose of improving the quality of life of people and the productivity of the core business”.
ISO 41011:2017 describes facility management as an “organisational function which integrates people, place and process within the built environment with the purpose of improving the quality of life of people and the productivity of the core business”.
FM is currently one of the fastest-growing professional and operational disciplines worldwide.
What is the purpose of the ISO 41000-series, and how will it help me and my organisation?
As a strategic tool and set of guidelines, the standard sets out a structure and framework as well as organisational processes along with the need for key skills and competencies. The standard provides appropriate guidance in a similar manner as the Quality, Occupational Safety and Health and Environmental Management System Standards that already exist.
What is ISO 41001?
ISO 41001:2018, the international facilities management system (FMS) standard, was released in April 2018.
It is the world’s first management systems standard (MSS) specifically for FM. MSS’ are used by businesses to ensure that operations, products and services meet or exceed expectations.
The standard aims to increase awareness and support the development, implementation and maintenance of effective facilities management regimes in all sectors of industry and commerce worldwide.
Why was ISO 41001 established?
The standard was developed to acknowledge the rapid growth and increased complexity of the facilities management market. It also reflects the growing needs and pressures impacting the sector, including:
- new regulatory requirements
- increasing sustainability and environmental considerations
- growing resilience and security demands
- changes in the way the modern workplace is designed, used and equipped, often driven by technological change
- the drive for corporate social responsibility
What are the benefits of ISO 41001 certification?
Certification can be a useful tool to add credibility, by demonstrating that your product or service meets the expectations of your customers.
ISO 41001 provides both in-house and outsourced FM Organizations with:
- enhanced image, credibility and currency
- a compliance framework to meet requirements
- improved quality and cost control
